Rhode Island State Tax Extensions: Business, Personal, Information and Nonprofit Tax Returns

ri

RhodeIsland does not have state income tax. So extension of time for personal and business tax extension is not required.

The State of Rhode Island will automatically grant you a 6- month tax extension if you were approved for a federal tax extension (Form 7004) and have no tax payments due. However, you will need to submit Rhode Island business extension form if you need to make a state tax payment or if you were not approved for a federal extension. If you do not need to make a tax payment and have received an approval notification from ExpressExtension, there's nothing more to do. Be sure to attach a copy of your extension when you file your state tax return.

Filing for a Rhode Island tax extension will not provide you with additional time to pay any tax balance due, which must be paid by your original filing deadline or interest and other payment penalties may apply.

Why I need to file Form RI-4868?

Use Form RI-4868 to obtain an automatic 6 month extension of time to file a Rhode Island Individual Income Tax Return. Form RI-4868 can be used to extend the filing of Form RI-1040, Rhode Island Resident Individual Tax Return, or RI-1040NR, Nonresident Income Tax Return. The filing or granting of an extension of time to file does not extend the time for payment of tax due on the return. Filing Form RI-4868 DOES NOT extend the time to file Form RI-1040H or Form RI-6238. These forms must be filed on or before April 15, 2025 even if you file an extension for Form RI-1040.

How do I get extension of time?

The Rhode Island extension form need not be filed if you are not required to make payment with Rhode Island extension form. If you must file a Rhode Island request for extension, you should: 1. Prepare the Rhode Island Extension Form RI-4868. 2. Clearly show the full amount properly estimated as Rhode Island income tax for the year 2024. If a proper estimate is not made, the extension request will not be considered valid. 3. File the extension with the Rhode Island Division of Taxation on or before April 15, 2025. 4. Pay the amount of Rhode Island tax due as calculated on Form RI-4868 on or before April 15, 2025. 5. Be sure to attach a copy of the Form RI-4868 to the front of the Rhode Island return when it is filed. 6. Retain the top portion of this form for your records.
