Maine State Tax Extensions: Business, Personal, Information and Nonprofit Tax Returns

me

State of Maine automatically provides 6 month extension of time for personal income tax return and 7 month extension of time for business income tax return. You don't have to file any form to get these extensions. However, you must pay the amount by due date if you owe any towards the tax.
For more information like forms, payment vouchers, payment methods etc, visit the respective section in this page.

A State of Maine extension request form is not required. If you are unable to file by the original due date of the return, Maine allows an automatic seven-month extension of time to file.

  • An extension to file your Maine return is not an extension to pay your tax.
  • The automatic extension is only effective if the return is filed within the seven-month extension period.
If you owe tax, you must pay at least 90% of that amount by the original due date for filing your return and the remaining amount due must be paid when the return is filed by the extended due date to avoid the failure-to-pay penalty. Interest will be charged on any tax paid after the original due date of your return.

When is the Maine corporate income tax return due?

The Maine corporate income tax return (Form 1120ME) is due on the same date as your federal corporate income tax return (the fifteenth day of the third month after the end of the tax year), without regard to an extension to file. The Maine filing due date for tax exempt entities subject to tax on unrelated business income (as reported on federal Form 990T) is 4 ½ months after the end of the tax year (May 16 for calendar year filers). 12/3/12

How do I request an extension of time to file Form 1120ME?

Maine Revenue Services does not require a written request to obtain an automatic extension to file. If you are unable to file your return by the original due date, Maine allows an automatic seven-month extension of time in which to file a corporate income tax return. Requests for additional time beyond the automatic extension to file must be submitted in writing prior to the expiration of the seven-month period.

Automatic Extension of six months:

Maine Revenue Services does not require you to request additional time to file your return. Maine automatically grants a six month extension of time to file until October 15. To avoid penalties you must pay at least 90% of your current year tax liability by April 15. Any tax not paid by the original due date of the Maine return will be assessed interest from the due date to the payment date.

Requests for additional time beyond the automatic six-month extension to file must be submitted in writing prior to the expiration of the six-month period. Generally, the total extension period cannot exceed eight months. The automatic extension is only effective if the return is filed within the six-month period.

Penalty and Interest:

Those who do not pay at least 90% of their current year tax liability on or before April 15 will be charged interest on the unpaid balance and a late payment penalty. Those who do not file for an extension, or file late are also charged a substantial late filing penalty.

A penalty for failure to file will not be assessed if you file your return by the extended due date. However, to avoid penalties for late payment, you must pay at least 90 percent of the tax you owe by the original return due date. Please remit your estimated tax payment with the extension payment voucher found in the booklet (1040PMT-ME). Interest will be charged on any unpaid tax balance remaining after the original return due date regardless of any extensions to file.

If a return is filed late without an approved extension, a late filing penalty of $25 or 10% of the total tax due, whichever is greater, is assessed. If the return is not filed upon a demand from Maine Revenue Services a penalty of 100% of the total tax may be assessed.
