Who can file Form 4868?

Individuals who cannot complete their federal tax return by the deadline for the following forms can apply with extension Form 4868:
Form 1040, Form 1040A, Form 1040EZ, Form 1040NR, Form 1040NR-EZ, Form 1040-PR or Form 1040-SS.
Domestic taxpayers within the U.S. must submit Form 4868 by the original April 15th deadline to receive a six-month extension. Taxpayers outside of the U.S. and Puerto Rico must submit Form 4868 by June 17th, 2019 to receive a 4-month extension.
An extension will give you a six-month extension of time to file but doesn’t give you extra time to pay your taxes. These are due April 15th, 2019 for domestic taxpayers and June 17th, 2019 for taxpayers outside the country.
