An automatic extension of 6 months time is granted to Individual tax returns for Oregon if the Federal extension had already been granted. Form 40-EXT is used to make the payment if you owe any. Similar 6 month extension is granted for business tax too. However, you will need to submit Oregon Form 20-V (PDF) if you need to make a state tax payment.

What is the Form used to get extension of time ?

The State of Oregon will automatically grant you a 6 month tax extension if you were approved for a federal tax extension and have no tax balance due. However, you will need to submit Oregon Form 20-V (PDF) if you need to make a state tax payment.

If you do not need to make a tax payment and have received an approval notification from ExpressExtension, there’s nothing more to do. Be sure to attach a copy of your extension form when you file your state tax return.

Filing for an Oregon tax extension will not provide you with additional time to pay any tax balance due, which must be paid by your original filing deadline or interest and other payment penalties may apply.

What are the Payment options?

  • Tax due for original return, which has been e-filed or mailed separately.
  • Tax due by the original return due date if you are filing for an extension on your return.
  • Estimated tax payments.
  • Tax due for an amended return filed for any year.

Do not use this voucher if:

  • Payment is being sent electronically.
  • Payment is for pass-through entity withholding, instead use Form TPV-19 (see Form OR-19, 150-101-182).

Required for accurate processing:

  • Check the calendar or fiscal tax year box.If you are a fiscal year filer, fill in the beginning and ending dates of your tax year.
  • Enter your BIN (Oregon business identification number, NOT your Oregon registry number), if known. If this is your first filing with the department, check the first-time filer box and leave blank; a BIN will be assigned.
  • Enter your FEIN (federal employer identification number),required.
  • Check the Composite Return box only if you are a pass-through entity making a payment on behalf of corporate owners electing to be part of a composite return.
Make your check payable to: Oregon Department of Revenue. To ensure proper credit to your account, write the filer’s name, BIN or FEIN, and tax year on your check.

Which form is used and what is the procedure to get extension?

Use Form 40-EXT to apply for an automatic six-month extension of time to file your Oregon return. Oregon State will honor all federal extensions of time to file individual income tax returns as valid Oregon extensions. If you received a federal automatic six-month extension (federal Form 4868), don’t use Oregon Form 40-EXT unless you owe Oregon tax for 2013.

Complete Oregon Form 40-EXT only if you:
  • Owe Oregon tax for 2013, cannot file your 2013 Oregon return by April 15, 2014, and will be making a payment; or
  • Are filing an extension for Oregon only.
Complete the tax payment worksheet to determine if you owe Oregon tax for 2013. If you owe Oregon tax, you must pay it by April 15, 2014.

Will I get extension to pay my tax also on getting extension of time to file my return?

No. An extension of time to file your return is NOT an extension of time to pay your tax. If you don’t pay all of the tax due when you apply for your extension, you will owe interest on the unpaid balance from April 15, 2014 until the date you pay it in full. The 2014 interest rate is 4 percent. You may also owe a late payment penalty. See “Penalties and interest” on page 2 of Form 40-EXT PDF.

To apply for an automatic six-month Oregon extension, file Form 40-EXT by April 15, 2014. If you are a fiscal year taxpayer, file Form 40-EXT by the regular due date of your return. Enter your name(s), Social Security number(s), and address on Form 40-EXT below. Detach and mail Form 40-EXT to us.
